Hi, I had implantable contact lens (and subsequent laser treatment) at Optimax in 2004. I have had no contact with Optimax since then.
After a problem with the lenses was identified by an optician this year, I contacted Optimax asking for a consultation with them to check this out.
The result of this consultation has left me very worried. I have also just read the Daily Mail 2021 article and am shocked that I was not contacted.
Can you please recommend a solicitor that could help me?
Thank you in advance.

Denise

Hi

I had my ICL surgery at London Fincley Road clinic by Jan Venter and subsequent laser in Glasgow in  2004. A few years ago I got the letter asking me to come back for an immediate check up, having had no contact with Optimax since the initial check up after my final laser surgery. This I duly did and have done so regularly since. Yesterday, I went to a private clinic not associated with Optimax as from the initial check after the letter for my cell count I thought I was getting the hard sell to have them removed all be it free of charge but to then have new lenses fitted at a cost of £8000, and just wanted a 2nd opinion.

What was always missing from the check ups was an open and honest explanation as to why these letters had been sent out and the true reason I should have had the lenses removed. All this information I was given yesterday when a more detailed scan of my eyes has shown the true figure of my cell count, significantly lower then one at Optimax Feb 25 even today at Optimax they took another cell count and it was different by many 100's of cell, giving albeit not a great picture but an improved picture. I've immediately decide to have my lenses removed having now been given all the facts by the new Private Clinic, NOT OPTIMAX, at my own cost. As I now have zero trust with the organization, this is the choice I would have made at the initial check up if the facts had been told to me, what damage has occurred since then and what impact that will have in the future only time will now tell. If at any stage in 2004 I had have been told that in years to come these lenses would have the potential to make me blind, I would have happily lived with glasses and contacts. I feel worse still as Optimax asked me to recommend the procedure to a patient who was very worried about the operation but had the same prescription as me. I did this happily, I truly hope she went went through with this or has had them removed with no permanent damage.

@Neerja, I am going through this just now.  I have to have my left one taken out in the next 3 months.  Do you have any update since after your explant?
