Founded by wealthy businessman Russell Keith Ambrose, in 2024 Optimax was sold to Clínica Baviera, owned by the global eye hospital group Aier Eye Hospital.

This is a highly profitable industry, controlled by corrupt businessmen who have no concern for the victims left with permanently damaged vision and lives shattered!

And when they find out too late, little or nothing is done to remedy the problems, with damaged customers turning to the NHS for expensive aftercare.

On the 18 February 2011, Sasha Rodoy suffered irreversible damage to her eyes after laser eye surgery at Optimax. She was told that her experience was an extremely rare occurrence, but after extensive research, she found that many others had reported similar problems.*

Through the course of her work, Sasha found that many patients had posted their negative experiences online, only to have their reviews removed, including from the questionably named review platform Trustpilot.

Discovering that the refractive surgery industry is essentially unregulated, determined to raise awareness and improve patient protection, Sasha launched My Beautiful Eyes campaign in January 2012, supported by John McDonnell MP, calling on the UK government to introduce greater regulation of the refractive eye surgery industry. The campaign prompted an overwhelming response from people seeking advice and sharing their own experiences. In response to this growing need for support, Sasha founded My Beautiful Eyes Foundation, a non profit organisation dedicated to providing information, guidance, and support to individuals considering or recovering from refractive eye surgery.

*Previously undisclosed, it was only through Optimax’s response to her second Subject Access Request (SAR) in 2016 that Sasha uncovered evidence that left her horrified. An internal email explained that the laser eye surgery she received in 2011 had been incorrectly prescribed by the optometrist, Swati Malkan, yet approved by the surgeon, Dr Wilbert Hoe (now retired).
